COALITION FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS IN THE PERFORMING ARTS

"Bringing Color to the Classics"
OPERA COMPOSER'S PROJECT

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

CAAPA’s inaugural Opera Composer's Showcase features a series of three 20-minute segments of original operas commissioned by CAAPA and program partner the Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council (PGCHC).  In a county rich with arts history, operatic material is everywhere.

The project is a two-year endeavor to help showcase and promote classical composers of color from the Prince George’s County region.  PGAHC and CAAPA will work together to support the growth of Prince George’s County’s burgeoning arts cluster, and in particular the classical music and opera genre,  by ensuring that creative talent has the opportunity to thrive.

Two-year project to Showcase original opera works by Black composers (Opera Showcase) in the Prince George’s County region and selected city/cities outside of the DMV. A winning composer is selected to launch their original opera.
