Executive Director Announces Retirement
A legacy fulfilled
The Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts (CAAPA) announces that Terri Allen, Executive Director and original founding member, has retired from her role effective December 31, 2025.
Mrs. Allen’s decision follows a period of serious and ongoing health challenges, including extended and repeated hospitalizations, which have made it necessary for her to prioritize her health and well-being. After careful consideration, she has concluded that she is unable to continue in the Executive Director role at the level of excellence and consistency that CAAPA requires.
“Serving CAAPA has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life,” said Allen. “As a founding member, I have been privileged to help shape the organization’s growth and impact and to advance opportunities for African American classical musicians and youth in the performing arts. I am immensely proud of what we have built together over the past twenty-two years.”
Under Mrs. Allen’s leadership, CAAPA has grown into a respected organization dedicated to “Bringing Color to the Classics.”
To ensure leadership continuity and organizational stability, Mrs. Allen has recommended that Ayanna Coleman, CAAPA’s current Advancement Director, be appointed Interim Executive Director effective January 1, 2026. The board has reviewed this recommendation and formally endorsed Mrs.Coleman’s appointment.
Mrs. Allen will remain closely connected to CAAPA and will provide consultation and support during the leadership transition and beyond, as her health permits.
CAAPA extends its deepest gratitude to Mrs. Allen for her visionary leadership, unwavering dedication, and decades of service to the organization, the artists, and the broader performing arts community. Her legacy will continue to guide and inspire CAAPA’s mission for generations to come.
